Anthony Smith Memorial 3-on-3 Tournament to be held on May 22-23 in Kirkwood
The Second Annual Hope Unlimited Anthony Smith Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will be held on May 22-23 at Concordia Lutheran Church (505 S. Kirkwood Road) in Kirkwood. The tournament is named in honor of Anthony Smith, a former Kirkwood High standuot (1999-2001), who died of leukemia on January 28, 2008, one day before his 25th birthday. Anthony and his twin brother Antoine went on to play collegiate basketball at Loyola of Chicago after their standout prep careers at Kirkwood.
Anthony Smith was an excellent player for the Pioneers during his three-year varsity career. Kirkwood compiled a 66-17 record during Smith's three years, including two district championships. A versatile 6'7" forward, Smith was the Suburban West Conference Player of the Year in 2001 during his senior year. Not only was Anthony a fantastic basketball player, but he was an excellent student and a wonderful young man to be around. He represented everything that was good in what we want to see from our young people and he was taken away from us way too soon. However, Anthony left a positive legacy and this tournament is an appropriate way to honor his memory and keep his legacy alive in Kirkwood through great efforts of youth outreach from Hope Unlimited.
The tournament is open to players of all age groups. The divisions will be broken down into 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade, 9th and 10th, 11th and 12th, 18-and-over and 35-and-over competitive. There will be divisions for boys and girls, men and women.
The registration fee for the tournament is $50 per team. You can register on-line by going to the website, hopeunlimitedkirkwood.org. For more information, you can call Hope Unlimited at (314) 821-2999 or email to Info@HopeUnlimitedKirkwood.org. The registration deadline is May 8.
