Sanijay Watts named a Division II First Team All-American
Former Jennings High standout Sanijay Watts was selected to the five-member NCAA Division II First Team All-American squad. The 6’4” Watts was a two-year star at Central Missouri State University, leading the Mules in scoring and rebounding in his two seasons in Warrensburg.
As a senior, Watts averaged 21.7 points and 9.5 rebounds to lead the Mules to a 27-4 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional championship game. As a junior, Watts led the Mules to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament by averaging 20 points a game.
In his last college game, Watts scored a game-high 29 points in the Mules’ 60-59 loss to top-seeded Midwestern State in the South Central Regional finals. Watts finished his career as the seventh player in Central Missouri State history to score at least 1,000 points and grab at least 500 rebounds in his career. Watts was able to do it in only two seasons.
After graduating from Jennings High as the school’s career scoring leader, Watts began his career at the junior college level, where he was a scoring phenom at Cowley County J.C. in Kansas and State Fair Community College in Sedalia. He averaged more than 20 points a game at both schools before coming to Warrensburg to embark on his All-American career at the Division II level.
Watts has also been selected to play in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II All-Star Game, which will be played on Friday in Springfield, Mass. He will be joined by current teammate and former St. Francis Borgia standout Alex Moosman, who averaged 15 points a game while leading the Mules in assists and 3-point shooting.
Watts and Moosman shared the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Player of the Year honor in 2006 when both were seniors. They were both selected to the NABC All-South Central Region team.
Central Missouri State head coach Kim Anderson will coach the West team for the All-Star Game.
