Metro East teams advance to Final Four

Breese Central and Madison High will both be taking trips to Peoria this weekend to compete in the Final Four of their respective state tournaments. Breese Central advanced to the semifinals of the IHSA Class 2A state tournament with a 63-52 victory over Murphysboro in the West Frankfort Supersectional on Tuesday night.

 The Cougars will face Peoria Manual in the state semifinals on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Carver Arena in Peoria. Robinson will take on Chicago Hales Fransiscan in the other semifinal matchup.

  The third-place game will be played on Saturday at 6:15 p.m. with the championship game to follow at 8:15 p.m.

  Madison advanced to the Class 1A semifinals with a thrilling 48-45 victory over Lewistown in the Jacksonville Supersectional..

  The Trojans are looking for their first state championship since 1981 when then-coach Larry Graham and former stars Morris Hughes, Patrick Hatter and Charles Claggett led Madison to the Class A state championship.

  Madison will take on Sesser-Valier in the state semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m. Catlin and Lanark will meet in the other semifinal game at 12:15 p.m. The winners will meet for the state championship on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the third-place game coming before at 12:15 p.m.

  In Class 3A action, Cahokia advanced to the Centralia Sectional championshp game with a 57-37 victory over Effingham. The Comanches will face either Centralia or Jerseyville on Friday night for the title. Centralia and Jerseyville will meet on Wednesday night.

  In Class 4A, O’Fallon defeated Edwardsville 55-51 in the semifinals of the Pekin Sectional in a game played at Belleville East High. Junior Roosevelt Jones scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Panthers. O’Fallon will face either Normal Community or East Moline on Friday night for the Sectional title at Pekin High.
