Former Lafayette High standout Will Kirksey transfers to SWIC
Former Lafayette High standout post player Will Kirksey has transferred to Southwestern Illinois College where he will play his sophomore season for Hall of Fame coach Jay Harrington.
The 6'8" 260-pound Kirksey was a force in the paint for Southeastern as a freshman as he helped lead the Falcons to a 24-11 record and a berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas last season.
After dropping more than 40 pounds during his freshman year, Kirksey became a beast inside as he averaged 12 points and eight rebounds a game for SIC, which finished eighth at the NJCAA Nationals while winning the Region 24 title in the process. Kirksey enjoyed an outstanding national tournament and was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Kirksey was able to get his release from SIC when former coach Todd Franklin left to become the new head coach at Vincennes, J.C. in Indiana.
A 2008 graduate of Lafayette, Kirksey played on a front-line that included current NCAA Division I players Tyler Griffey (University of Illinois) and Tony Meier (Wisconsin-Milwaukee). Kirksey should make it three after this season as he has already attracted the interest of several Division I schools around the country.
This is a major pick-up for Coach Harrington, especially at this late of date. You can call it an early Christmas present. Jay's SWIC teams are usually solid on the perimeter, but now they have an inside presence, much like they did three seasons ago when they had former St. Charles High standout Josh Harrellson roaming the paint.
