St. Louisan Tyus is Big Gator on Campus
Former Hazelwood Central High standout Alex Tyus has been a stalwart in the Florida Gators starting lineup for the past two seasons. The 6’8” 225-pound junior forward has been one of the Gators’ most consistent players during their 17-6 season.
Tyus is currently averaging 12.9 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds while shooting 54 percent from the field and 72 percent from the free throw line.
He has also put together some top performances against the top teams in the Southeastern Conference. Tyus had 17 points and seven rebounds, including a pair of 3-pointers, in a nationally-televised game against powerful Kentucky.
Tyus had a game-high 23 points in a 87-71 victory over a huge Georgia team that averages 6’10” across the front line. He had 18 points and seven rebounds against nationally-ranked Tennessee.
In last weekend’s 66-65 victory at Alabama, Tyus had 19 points and seven rebounds. He blocked a potential game-winning shot at the end of the game to preserve the victory.
As a sophomore, Tyus averaged 12.5 points and 6.2 rebounds while shooting 59 percent from the field.
Tyus was a three-year standout at Hazelwood Central High before moving to Harmony Christian Academy to conclude his high school career. At Harmony, he was a teammate of former McDonald’s All-American and current Memphis Grizzlies standout O.J. Mayo.
